Are You Sharing the Love?

12 November 2008 by Lisa 698 views 4 Comments

Since launching the SWBN blog we’ve been really pleased (overwhelmed almost) by the number of visitors, page views and comments we have received. But one thing we’ve noticed is that our posts are not getting much social bookmarking action and we were wondering why that might be.

Is it a blog design problem? Are our social bookmarking buttons too hidden? Is it the content? Or is it a wider issue with social bookmarking itself?

I’ll be honest, I go through bouts when I bookmark regularly – mainly on Del.icio.us and usually to remind myself to go back and read the post again or to save it for future reference. But I can go days or weeks when I don’t bookmark at all, and it’s not because I’m not getting value from what I’m reading.

My personal feelings on social bookmarking are:

1. The flow of daily information is so fast moving and the time to consume it is often short, that I do not have time to bookmark everything as I go along.

2. Sometimes I just need to be asked nicely. Occasionally, I notice that bloggers like Darren Rowse (Problogger) will ask for people to Digg or Stumble a particular post. He doesn’t ask often and always quite politely, so if I like the post I will usually do as he asks. Perhaps every web page needs a big red flashing button reminding us to social bookmark if we like what we read?

3. These days, if I like something, my first thought is to Twitter and/or Friendfeed it before I ever remember social bookmarking. Even sharing through Google Reader comes before other bookmarking – it’s just so easy.

4. Social bookmarking has become so fixed in my mind as an Internet Marketing strategy, that I often forget to do it naturally and only remember to Stumble/Digg/Del.icio.us etc. when I’m in promotion mode. When my mind is on promoting blog posts and web pages of my own, it reminds me to share the love, and then I will bookmark interesting content I find… but I need that brain jolt!

5. I use a number of different computers every day due to my work, and the only one that is set up for easy bookmarking is my home one. On all the other computers I have no control over installing browsers and toolbars, so it isn’t easy to bookmark as I go along.

I would love to know your own thoughts on social bookmarking. Do you still bookmark regularly? If not, why not? Is it a lack of interest, information overload, or something altogether different? Are you sharing the love?

I guess I’m like you and don’t think to bookmark sites unless I’m in bookmarking mode. There is a perceived time factor, but really – how long does it take to click the SU thumbs up? I read most content through my feed reader too, which means no social bookmarking unless there are the links at the bottom of the feed.

Perhaps that’s part of the problem. Technology improves the ways we have access to the content (like feed readers) which makes it harder to do other things.
