Forest, Trees and Personal Attention

30 June 2009 by Allison 778 views 3 Comments

Yesterday’s post generated a bit of private interest in the “why would you need to get help when you know how to do this yourself” kind.  It’s a justified question and one that can catch people up at even the highest levels when they believe they can “do it all” because they have been able to do it before, or they have learned all there is to know about a subject.

We know that elite athletes require a trainer to keep them fit and exercised, but what is less well known is that most elite athletes also have a motivation coach and a sports psychologist making sure their momentum and mental focus is kept directly on the prize. In the world of us average people this service is provided by the profession usually titled as Results Coaches.

These people will take you through identifying what it is you want to achieve (usually a single goal only so that completion is easily identified and can be quantified), setting out the steps to get there, and keep you honest along the way. A motivational project manager if you like.

It is a RARE person who can maintain focus on anything for a long period of time (7 minutes max is the generally accepted norm for the avergae human, and as much as it peeves me, in some ways I really am…average).  Passion for the subject will keep you there longer, yet human endurance is not unlimited. Even Gary V will have down time. This is where a results coach can be invaluable, your focus will be on one single goal.Forest or trees

So if you find yourself in the situation where you need some help, here are some things you should look out for in your Results Coach

1) They will need to have done it before*. Respect yourself enough to look for experience over friendship. Ask for references.

2) Pay as much as you can afford for the service, but ask for a scale of fees up front. There is the possibility for creativity and negotiation in the process, but if you have picked a true professional then expect to pay AND get your money’s worth in results.

3) if the person is not a right fit don’t be afraid to terminate the relationship on a professional basis. Like choosing a shrink/chiropractor/mechanic, if you are uncomfortable then you will be doing more damage than good

4) Expect to be pushed and also pulled. It’s not all whips and chains

5) A Results Coach cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. If you aren’t willing to work, be prepared for them to terminate the relationship (and keep your money if that is what was agreed).

So next time you are in a dip, or just need a helping hand as you climb over/around/or through a hurdle, consider taking on a results coach. It could be just what you need to get to the next level of success.

*Yes it’s a vicious circle if you decide you want to take this on as a career decision yourself, but practice on your family maybe before going into business and making people confused an unhappy.

Yes, it’s important to realise that having a coach is not a sign of weakness or an admission that you don’t know what you are doing. Even the coaches have coaches!

Just as we seek out professionals for other aspects of our lives that may not be working quite how we want them to (regardless of whether we know what we SHOULD be doing or not), we shouldn’t be afraid to seek out professionals in our own field.

I was listening to an interview recently where Bill Glazer mentioned that even Dan Kennedy speaks everyday with Lee Milteer about business, life etc. EVERYDAY!
