WordPress Widget Translates Into (Good!) Traffic
Let’s see how long it takes for the big names to latch onto this one. Beat them to the gun in grabbing extra traffic to your blog and when they try to give this tip away as a “bonus” you can scoff haughtily at them.
You may have noticed about two-three weeks ago I changed the translation widget to a new one that had a wider range of languages. This turned out to be a most serendipitous event. Checking the blog stats later that week I noticed something pretty darn cool!
The translation widget was somehow, don’t ask me I have been way too lazy busy to check it out, was allowing Google to search the blog via the foreign language versions of Google.
Here is what our “recent keywords” looks like in Statcounter. Looks rather….different!
Still you don’t want a heap of traffic turning up to your doorstep and then going away, so I checked into how “good” this traffic was by looking at their browsing habits. The picture below shows the last 200 odd visitors to the blog
Pink being English speaking searches
Green being Non-English searches that left immediately
Yellow being Non-English searches that stayed more than 5 seconds.
Not bad! Combine that with 4 staying more than 2 hours (our Phillipins guest stayed 4 hours!) and reading every page on the blog.
I now know that “tip sa negosyo” = “tips for business” and tagalog speakers are looking for them.
So try WordPress Global Translator out if you want to open your blog up to the world of non-English speakers and drop us a comment telling us how you go.

I’m gonna get that Widget now!! Tried adding a translation widget a year or so ago and it created all kinds of havoc…good to know you’re getting such great results with this one.

Thanks Allison, I saw a tweet from Karen and added it to our blog. I will also add a blog post and track back from my personal blog in a bit. Great info, and glad to call you a Twitter and 30DC friend.

Cool! I’ve never tried adding a translator to our blog, but after reading your post I’m definitely going to try it out.
